WATCH: The Nike ad everyone is calling a ‘masterpiece’, what it means for us all…

Nike released a new ad that has gotten Twitter excited, calling it a masterpiece.

Tiger Woods’s return is included in the advert

Created by marketing agency Wieden+Kennedy, based in Portland, Oregon, USA, the ad looked at  4,000 sports action sequences and chose 72 of them to combine into 36 split-screen moments where the action on both sides appears to meld into one.

Dylan Lee wrote the script, narrated by soccer star Megan Rapinoe.

The video shows the power of sports in uniting people and features notable sports stars such as LeBron James, Cristiano Ronaldo, Serena Williams, Colin Kaepernick and South African athlete Caster Semenya.

Our favourite line:

When we’re doubted, we’ll play as one

Watch the ad which is part of its You Can’t Stop Us campaign below:

In the context of Zimbabwe, you can look back a year ago when we had the netball team play at the World Cup for the first time ever. That moment united a nation across, racial, political and other lines that divide the country. Look back at when Kirsty Coventry won medals at the Olympics and the All Africa Games. Look at when the women’s national team made their debut at the Olympics becoming the first team sport since the Golden Girls of 1980 to do so. Look at the Dream Team of the 1990s and how it galvanised us all. Or the various moments of Zimbabwe cricket team from the Endor Brandes when England visited, Olonga’s World Cup, the ill-fated Qualifier of 2018, they all brought the nation together. From our readership alone, we see the excitement around the adventures of the likes of Tino Kadewere, Tanya Muzinda, Macauley Bonne, Marvelous Nakamba,

At this point, while the pandemic allows us pretty much no sport, we live in the hope of those moments and that we will do it together again.

Because, that right there, sport is what makes us believe we are a united Zimbabwe.
