UAE Women upset Zimbabwe Women in thriller

Zimbabwe 120-7 in 20 overs (Sharne Mayers 23, Modester Mupachikwa 22, Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano 16, Mahesh 3-15, Sharma 2-31)

UAE 121-6 in 20 overs (Kumari Egodage 41*, Esha Oza 36; Loreen Tshuma 2-18 : Kelis Ndhlovu 2-20)

UAE Women won by 4 wickets

A misfield at fine leg off the last ball by Esther Mbofana handed hosts United Arab Emirates Women an historic four-wicket win over Zimbabwe Women in ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier group B match on Wednesday evening.

Already qualified Zimbabwe put on a modest 120 for the loss of seven wickets, which the UAE hunted down with determination.

Kumari Egodage led the way with an unbeaten 41, while Esha Oza made 36.

And it got down to the last over with UAE needing 14 off six balls. The first four balls cost four runs, then a wide that went for two followed. The last ball was delayed by an injury to a batter and when Nomvelo Sibanda bowled in, it was perfect as it went straight to Mbofana on the ground. She fumbled it and it deflected for a four to give the UAE a victory.

Zimbabwe’s batting effort had a 23 from Sharne Mayers and 22 from Modester Mupachikwa. Everything else was forgettable.

Zimbabwe now face Ireland on Saturday 23 September in a day/night match again.

The winner makes it to the final of the Qualifier and the T20 World Cup.

With Zimbabwe very inexperienced playing under floodlights, will that affect them?

The other semi-final is between Bangladesh and Thailand.
