You’ve been my inspiration, helped me stay focused, stay strong and true to who I am. THANK YOU,TATENDA,NGIYABONGA.

Coventry bows out from the Olympics for the last time without a medal. She came 6th in the final of 200m backstroke. That after 5 Olympics she is ranked 6th best in the world is a big achievement in itself. Her standing as one of the best ever, certainly the best individual in Africa and the one who took us from 1 medal before 2004 to 8 medals now will forever live.

Yes Kirsty has won 7 of the 8 medals Zimbabwe has won at the Olympics, ever.

Our gift of the gab falls flat in an attempt to state how important she has been to us as a country. Without her our standing in the Olympic world would have remained rather minor and  relegated to the annals of time.

But this is what she gave us, in all her blood and sweat:

2x Olympic Champion. 7x World Champion. 11x All Africa Champion. World Record Holder. Swimmer. IOC Member.

We are lucky to have lived in the time of Kirsty Leigh Coventry.
