Micheen Thornycroft is one of 12 individual athletes representing Zimbabwe at the Olympics in Rio De Janeiro.
The Harare-born rower is competing in her second games for the country after the taking part in the singles at the 2012 Olympics.
We scoured the Internets for some cool fun facts about and there are loads by the way:
- She has been nominated for the ANSA (Annual National Sports Award) Sportswoman of the Year Award twice, in 2013 and in 2015.
- Thornycroft read Human Kinetics and Ergonomics, and Ichthyology and Fisheries studies for her undergraduate education at Rhodes University. She then did her Honours in Ichthyology and Fisheries studies.
- At varsity she was president of the rowing club and n 2009, she won the Sportswoman of the Year Award at the Rhodes University Sports Council Awards Dinner
- She went to Springvale House and then Peterhouse College.
- Her nickname is Mouse
- In 2012, Micheen Thornycroft was part of a team of rowers taking part in the rowing edition of the Ubunye Challenge to GBP250,000 for the sport in South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Thornycroft impressed on Day 1 of the Olympics finishing second in her heat. She was quoted as saying about the choppy conditions were “probably the worst I’ve ever raced in.”
