Prince caps Zimbabwe comeback to secure draw against Algeria

Prince Dube came off the bench and with literally his first touch scored the goal that secured a 2-2 draw against Algeria at the National Sports Stadium on Monday.

Derlot and Riyad Mahrez had given Algeria the lead in the first half in which Zimbabwe’s midfield was largely absent.

With three minutes to go captain Knowledge Musona first hit the bar from a free kick. The ball came out and was recycled only for Tino Kadewere to be fouled at the end of the edge of the box on the left side. He curled one in giving M’boli in goal for Algeria absolutely no chance.

Coach Zvardko Logarusic then made four changes, bringing in Khama Billiat, Kuda Mahachi, Ovidy Karuru and Divine Lunga for David Moyo, Jordan Zemura, Tafadawa Rusike, Adam Chicksen.

Immediately, Zimbabwe dominated the attack, with more play on the turf, quicker attack. Chances were created continuously but with 10 minutes to go it looked as if it would be one of those matches.

In came Dube for the metronomic and reliable Tendayi Darikwa.

The corner was floated in. It found Dube unmarked on his own. His first touch was straight at the keeper who spilled it it in just inside the post.

Both sides failed to create much more after that and Zimbabwe secured a point against Africa’s number one team.

And with the chances created, Zimbabwe will feel they had a chance to win this.

The best player on the park was Knowledge Musona who carried his side and was involved in many important moments.
