Positive Zimbabwe wallop Singapore

Zimbabwe put on a decidedly positive effort as they hammered Singapore by a eyewatering 111 runs in an opening ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier B match at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo on Monday.

Asked to bat in overcast conditions, Zimbabwe amassed a total of 236 for the loss of five wickets from their 20 overs.

Coach Dave Houghton rolled the dice and put captain Craig Ervine at the top to open, and it paid off well, as he smashed 34 off 16 balls.

On the other end Regis Chakabva impressed with 24 off 12 balls before he was run out attempting a run where there was none.

When Wessly Madhevere fell for two, at the stroke of the powerplay, Zimbabwe were 70/3.

Enter Sikandar Raza and together with the returning Sean Williams put on 103 for the fourth wicket.

Williams scored 53 off 35 balls, which included five fours and six.

On the other end, Raza carried on his rich vein of form, scoring 87 off 40 balls.

Anantha Krishna took one for 31 and Amjad Mahboob one for 42.

In response, Singapore never really got going. Rohan Rangarajan was the first to go with the score on six, and four balls into the second over. Blessing Muzarabani with the wicket.

When wickets were not falling Zimbabwe were largely frugal.

Tendai Chatara returned three four 14 from his four overs and Muzarabani two for 21.

Meanwhile, at Steven Taylor scored the first century of the tournament, as the United States of America beat Jersey by eight wickets, with 11 balls to spare.

Taylor scored 101 off 55 as the USA got to 159 or the loss of two wickets, chasing 155.

Jersey’s 154 for the loss of five wickets was largely buoyed by Asa Tribe’s unbeaten 73.

Group A continues tomorrow with Zimbabwe taking on Jersey at Queen’s Sports Club, while Singapore face off against USA at BAC.
