Zimbabwe’s Peter Wetzlar smashed his own national record in 100m freestyle swimming at the Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday.
Wetzlar came in at 50:31, in heat 4 of the event. His previous record was 50:50 in 2019.
He finished fifth in his heat in what is a very competitive event. IY Ho came first on 49:49.
With the new record, Wetzlar has now eight of the 10 fastest times in 100m at the Olympics.
To qualify for the semis, he will need to be in the top 16, for which he has an outside chance.
Wetzlar’s new personal best comes after that of Donata Katai, who while unable to move forward into the semis, came away with head held high.
