Star batter Chip Mugeri-Tiripano led with the bat and teenage sensation Kelis Ndhlovu with the ball as Zimbabwe Women clinched third-place at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier on Sunday.

They recovered from the heartbreak of losing out on a place at the World Cup, returning to beat Thailand Women by seven runs in a play-off match.

Mayers was aggressive, scoring 23 off 18. She was removed by Phannita Maya. Ndhlovu followed soon after falling to Thipatcha Putthawong for 20.

Mugeri-Tiripano joined Modester Mupachikwa at the crease, with the pair putting on 40 for the fourth wicket. Mupachikwa would get run out for 19.

Mugeri-Tirpano watched wickets fall on the other end, as she ended the innings on an unbeaten 39.

Zimbabwe were 118 for the loss six wickets at the end of their overs.

Thailand’s response was steady up front.

Openers Nannapat Khoncharoenkai and Natthakan Chantham put on 76 for the opening stand.

Loreen Tshuma broke their stand, removing Chantham for 35. Two balls later Khoncharoenkai was gone for 42, Ndhlovu taking her first victim.

Captain Naruoemol Chaiwai provided rearguard action, but wickets kept falling increasing the run rate to over 10.

Nomvelo Sibanda took Chaiwai with the last ball of the innings, but it was Ndhlovu’s three for 15 off three overs will be the highlight.

Captain Mary-Anne Musonda made amends for her below-average catching in the ill-fated semi-final, collecting three of them as Thailand were limited to 111 for the six wickets.
