Day 2 – Stumps: Tuskers lead by 218 runs
Fine innings by Nkosana Mpofu and Sean Williams helped Tuskers to complete a first-innings lead of 218 runs over Rhinos on the second day of their Logan Cup match at Old Hararians Sports Club on Sunday.
Tuskers began the day in the happy position of having 93 runs on the board without loss in their first innings, with Mpofu on 44 and Tanu Makoni on 37.
They did not stay together much longer, but took their partnership past three figures to 102 before Makoni was caught off Carl Mumba for 44.
Taffy Mupariwa was not particularly comfortable in scoring 14, and Brian Chari never really got going in his innings of 19.
However, Mpofu had moved to his first first-class century in six years, and the third of his career.
His two previous centuries were both brilliant innings that won matches for Tuskers against Rocks and Rhinos in Bulawayo each by just one wicket.
He finally went for 122, caught off Johnathan Campbell, with the score now 219 for four, having hit 22 fours while facing 191 balls.
Williams came in determined to build on the advantage quickly, showing some brilliant shots as he raced out of the blocks.
Milton Shumba, however, was disappointing, scoring only 11 off 46 balls before being caught off Kiran Carlson.
Clive Madande went for 20 and Jordan Morris for nine, but Ainsley Ndlovu proved the partner Williams needed, playing a positive innings himself and taking the score from 330 for seven to 404.
At this point both fell within five balls, Williams again narrowly missing a century – he was caught by Campbell off Christophe Masike for 92, which took him only 80 balls and contained 11 fours and a six.
The last pair hung around a while before Sheu Musekwa suddenly decided to go on a hitting spree and slammed three quick fours before perishing for 22, giving Mike Chinouya a consolation wicket and leaving Charlton Tshuma not out with a dogged six off 57 balls.
The innings thus closed for 432, and that ended play for the day.
Brandon Mavuta again had much work to do with the ball, bowling 41 overs — nobody else bowled more than 17 — and his four wickets cost him 143 runs.

Mega Market Mountaineers – 311-7 in 87 overs (Tony Munyonga 93, PJ Moor 89, Ben Compton 37; Faraz Akram 2/31, Tanaka Chivanga 2/54, Tapiwa Mufudza 2/84)

Day 1 – Stumps
A superb fifth-wicket partnership of 141 between Tony Munyonga and PJ Moor enabled Mega Market Mountaineers to recover from a bad start and finish the first day of their Logan Cup match against Eagles at Harare Sports Club on Sunday at 311 for seven wickets.
Mountaineers batted on winning the toss, but were soon in trouble.
Clive Chitumba opened their innings with Ben Compton, but was soon caught by Kudzai Maunze off Brad Evans for four.
He was quickly followed back to the pavilion by Spencer Magodo, caught at the wicket off Tanaka Chivanga for five, and Kudzai Sauramba, who did not score before he was caught by Craig Ervine off Faraz Akram, to make the score 22 for three wickets.
As so often, Munyonga provided a calm head in a difficult situation, while Compton held firm, and they took the score to 93 before Tapiwa Mufudza became the fourth bowler to take a wicket by having Compton lbw for 37.
The rescue had begun, and now Moor came in, in aggressive mood, to continue the job with Munyonga.
Both unfortunately were to fall just short of the centuries they deserved.
At 234 for five Munyonga was caught by Chamu Chibhabha off Chivanga for 93, scored off 145 balls with three sixes and 11 fours.
Moor also went at 264 for six, caught off Mufudza for 89, which took him 110 deliveries with two sixes and 16 fours.
Shingi Masakadza soon followed for six, lbw to Akram.
Donald Tiripano played a solid innings and was still there at the close of play with 32, his partner being Wellington Masakadza with 13.
With these two going well and at 311 for seven wickets, Mountaineers will be hoping to add significantly to this score on Monday.
So far Mufudza, Chivanga and Akram have taken two wickets each, the latter very economical having conceded only 31 runs off his 17 overs.
