Twenty years ago, Kuda Chimbudzi arrived in the United Kingdom as a refugee.
In 2018, he was appointed as head kitchen gardener for the English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, a job he holds now, as part of the club’s holistic approach to a footballer’s diet.
In sharing his story with BBC, the dreadlocked Chimbudzi was inspired by his uncle back home in Zimbabwe.
“Growing in Zimbabwe, everybody got little pieces of land. My uncle is a grower. He used to
grow bananas and all kinds of fruits.”Chimbudzi told the BBC.
“I’ve always been a kitchen gardener and this has always been my passion. I feel like I can use ornamental energies to actually make the edible plants look good. “It was a dream come true to really come and work in something that I really like to do,” he added.
He says the idea behind the garden came from up top at Spurs.
“The kitchen garden was the idea of the chairman Daniel Levy. It was set up based on
sustainability, ecology, and nutrition,” Chimbudzi said.
“I would like to encourage the youths to come around and have a walk and see things that
inspire them,” he continued.
Chimbuzi’s club is in the Uefa Champions League this season and is home to England captain Harry Kane and Fifa World Cup winner Hugo Lloris. They rely on Chimbudzi for the constant supply of fruits and vegetables.
Chimbudzi’s work helped Spurs to a successful spell in the early days under current coach Antonio Conte.
According to The Sun, the coach had his players eat weeds.
“We have lost our knowledge of edible indigenous plants — some are of greater value than many of the crops we eat day in, day out,” Chimbudzi was then quoted.
