Day 1 – Stumps

The Old Hararians pitch was full of runs again on Wednesday as, despite a disappointing start, Eagles batters Kudzai Maunze and Tadiwanashe Marumani filled their boots to score big centuries on the first day of their Logan Cup match against Southern Rocks.

Eagles naturally finished the day in a very dominant position at 396 for five wickets.

They were fortunate to win the toss, but they lost the wicket of Matthew Welch in the third over, bowled by Jalat Khan for five.

His partner, Tinashe Kamunhukamwe, played some aggressive strokes to score 26 off 27 balls before he was caught off Cuthbert Musoko for 26, when the score was at 35.

Maunze made a cautious start to his innings, while his next partner Nick Welch made 34 before he also fell to a catch off the bowling of Musoko – 105 for three.

Chamu Chibhabha scored 18 before Priviledge Chesa had him out lbw at 132 for four.

This was almost Rocks’ last success of the day, as the aggressive Marumani joined the steady Maunze and they resolutely put the bowlers to the sword.

Both passed their centuries, Marumani beating Maunze to the mark and getting there off only 79 balls, while Maunze took a more sedate 131 deliveries.

They looked set to bat out the day whether, in what proved to be the penultimate over, Marumani finally bowed out, another man caught off Musoko for 163.

He scored the runs off 155 deliveries and hit four sixes and 19 fours.

Marumani was out at 396 for five, his partnership with Maunze realising 264 runs.

Faraz Akram came in now but faced only two balls before the umpires decided the light was not good enough to continue.

Musoko was the leading wicket-taker of the day, taking three wickets, but they cost him 68 runs off only 10 overs.

Day 1 – Stumps: Rhinos trail by 164 runs

PJ Moor and Brian Bennett scored fifties for Mega Market Mountaineers on Wednesday, but they were probably a little disappointed to be dismissed for 253 on day one of their Logan Cup match against Rhinos at Kwekwe Sports Club.

By the close of play the hosts had made a fair start to their innings at 79 for two wickets.

Mountaineers, deciding to bat on winning the toss, made a poor start, losing the wickets of Joylord Gumbie and Tony Munyonga, for five runs, both without scoring.

Kevin Kasuza, carefully, and Timycen Maruma, aggressively, brought about a recovery by adding 71 together, but were both out in quick succession to Brandon Mavuta, for 29 and 44 respectively – 83 for four.

Moor took charge for a while in his usual aggressive manner, scoring 51 off 48 balls, and Bennett proved to be a good partner as they added 85 together.

Donald Tiripano added 30 runs to the cause, sharing another useful partnership with Bennett of 54, before both were out with the score 222.

Bennett was the highest scorer of the innings with 60 from 85 balls, with a six and seven fours.

Wellington Masakadza and Salman Mirza put on another 31 together before Prince Masvaure came to the fore with the ball, and he finished off the innings for 253, taking the last three wickets in an over for just two runs.

Masvaure finished with the best figures of four for 28, while Mavuta had three batters out for 90.

When Rhinos batted, Tendai Chatara struck quickly, bowling out Takudzwanashe Kaitano in his first over for seven.

Tarisai Musakanda hit a quick 35 before he was caught at mid-on, while Ben Curran played a more solid innings, finishing the day with 33 not out, while Masvaure was in with him with eight.
