LOGAN CUP: Tuskers strike late as they try to check Southern Rocks advantage; Rhinos dig in

Southern Rocks 271/6 after 73 overs (Mutumbami 74, Innocent Kaia 55; Nyumbu 2-67, Chimhamhiwa 1-23)

The late wicket of a steady looking Richmond Mutumbami helped check a growing advantage by Southern Rocks on the second day of a Logan Cup match against Tuskers at Harare Sports Club.

Mutumbami looked as if he had all the comfort of the world, looking settled on 74 before he was trapped leg before by John Nyumbu.

This was after breakthroughs earlier following a partnership between Mutumbami and Roy Kaia which yielded 65 and one with William Mashinge, producing 38.

By then Innocent Kaia with 55 had helped set up the innings together with useful little innings from Ben Curran who made 35 and 23 from Sikandar Raza. Roy Kaia made 29.

Overnight are Mashinge on 18 and Tendai Chisoro with 16.

Earlier Tuskers could only add 11 runs to their overnight score as they were bowled out for 159 in 42.3 overs.

The wickets were claimed my Blessing Muzarabani who took a pair with some peach bowling. He returned four for 45. The other went to Shane Snater who completed his five wicket haul with five for 45.

Luke Jongwe was left stranded on one end with 34 as wickets fell the other side.


Eagles 161 all out in 49.2 overs(Chirawu 34*, Maunze 11; Mavuta 4-14, Chingwara 3-19)

Rhinos 134/4 after 51 overs (Kaitano 63, Burl 18, Matsiwe 16*; Chingava 1-14, Ngarava 1-16)

STUMPS DAY 2 -Rhinos trail by 27 runs

Takudzwanashe Kaitano scored his second half century for Rhinos in this year’s Logan Cup on day two of their match against Eagles at Old Hararians.

Rhinos did well to bowl out Eagles for 161 after their overnight score of 58 for the loss of two wickets.

At the crease were Gareth Chirawu on 34 and Wesley Madhevere with four.

Tafara Chingwara and Brandon Mavuta then combined to clip the Eagles wings.

Mavuta, captaining the side took four for 14 and Chingwara three for 19.

Chirawu departed for 34 to Chingwara and not too soon after Madhevere was dismissed for 19.

After that, only Regis Chakabva got to double figures, notching up 44 runs.

In response, Rhinos had a terrible start when Prince Masvuare was caught behind for a duck by wicketeeper Chakabva off Richard Nagarava.

The rebuild was dogged, a lot of digging in.

Kaitano was unbeaten on 63 at the of the day with Bright Matsiwe on 16.

Ryan Burl made 18 before he was run out, while Charles Kunje was Oskar Kolk’s first victim in Logan Cup cricket for 14.
