LOGAN CUP: Rhinos skittle Eagles for 86, Rocks in driver’s seat against Tuskers

Eagles – 86 all out in 35.4 overs (Romario Roach 30, Nick Welch 15, Tadiwanashe Marumani 14; Muhammad Adil 5/31, Carl Mumba 3/22, Antum Naqvi 1/3)

Rhinos – 149-6 in 44.5 overs (Prince Masvaure 38, Ben Curran 32, Patrick Rowe 31*; Hamza Sajjad 2/24, Wessly Madhevere 2/34, Alex Russell 2/48)

Day 3 – Stumps: Rhinos lead by 63 runs

The fine bowling of Muhammad Adil enabled Rhinos to bowl Eagles out for 86 on Friday morning and by stumps they had established a lead of 63 runs on the first innings with four wickets in hand in their Logan Cup match at Takashinga Cricket Club.

Eagles began the third day’s play, after very little play on the first two, at 55 for six wickets, with Romario Roach on 11 and Tapiwa Mufudza four.

Roach went on to score 30, but had little support from his partners as the side slid to 86 all out.

Adil’s brilliant bowling gave him five wickets for 31 runs, and he was well supported by Carl Mumba with three for 22.

Ben Curran with 32 and Bright Matsiwe, 18, gave Rhinos a good start with 50 for the first wicket before Hamza Sajjad dismissed them both within three deliveries.

Then Wessly Madhevere claimed the wickets of Antum Naqvi and Remembrance Nyathi with successive balls, neither getting a run, and Eagles had reduced them to 59 for four.

However, Prince Masvaure held firm with a solid innings of 38, helped by Patrick Rowe, 31 not out, while Nyasha Mayavo scored 21, so by the close Rhinos were 149 for six.

Rain again cut play short, and with one day left Rhinos will do very well on the final day on Saturday if they are able to beat the weather and bowl Eagles out again to win the match.

Southern Rocks – 285 and 86-1 in 24 overs (Alistair Frost 30*, Brian Mudzinganyama 24, Dominic Bess 19*; Ernest Masuku 1/26)

Tuskers – 200 all out in 59.3 overs (Brian Chari 62, Adrian Mupembe 30, Nkosana Mpofu 26; Cuthbert Musoko 4/32, Priviledge Chesa 2/25, Jalat Khan 2/37)

Day 3 – Stumps: Southern Rocks lead by 171 runs

Despite another good innings from their captain, Brian Chari, Tuskers fell 85 runs behind Southern Rocks on the first innings of their Logan Cup match at Old Hararians Sports Club on Friday, and may have a fight on the final day to avoid defeat.

Overnight Tuskers had just started their reply to Rocks’ first-innings score of 285, and with Nkosana Mpofu making 26 in support, Chari scored a fine 62 off 78 balls, with a six and 10 fours, and when he was out to Cuthbert Musoko at 130 for three, Tuskers were making good progress.

However, wickets fell quickly after his dismissal, and eight men were out for 166.

Their new wicket-keeper, Adrian Mupembe, scored a valuable 30 with the bat to enable them to reach 200 before they were all out.

Musoko was the best of the bowlers with four wickets for 32 runs.

Before the close Rocks had taken their advantage to 171, with Brian Mudzinganyama out for 24 and Alistair Frost and Dom Bess at the crease with 30 and 19 respectively.

They will be hoping to complete a victory on Saturday if the weather permits.
