LOGAN CUP DAY 1: Garwe snaps Tuskers, Maruma buoys Mountaineers

Logan Cup action resumed on Sunday with both matches taking place in Harare.

At Harare Sports Club, Timycen Maruma, with 91 for Mountaineers, and Tendai Chisoro, with four cheap wickets for Rhinos, were the leading performers on a rather frenetic first day at Harare Sports Club, as the two teams played each other in the Logan Cup competition on Sunday.

Mountaineers, all out for 236, did not have one of their best days, with only two batsmen scoring more than 26, while Rhinos, 60 for two at the close, cannot yet claim to be in the stronger position.

Across town at Old Hararians, Eagles’ experienced pace bowler Trevor Garwe returned to his best form at Old Hararians Sports Club on Sunday, taking five wickets for only 34 runs to shatter Tuskers’ batting on the first day of their Logan Cup match.

The pitch was not easy for batting, as the bounce was uneven and the batsmen were in particular danger of being bowled or trapped lbw by deliveries that kept low.

Most of the Tuskers’ top order failed, with Taffy Mupariwa out for four, Craig Ervine for seven and Nkosana Mpofu for one.

The exception was Brian Chari, who played a superb innings for 57 out of 81 for five, before a straight ball from Garwe kept very low and trapped him lbw.

Tuskers were all out for 154. At close of play Eagles are 144 for three with Richmond Mutumbami on 66.

Play resumes on Monday at 10am. Entry is free.
