LOGAN CUP: Compton, tail overshadow Madhevere seven-wicket haul

A Ben Compton century and an 80-run last wicket partnership handed Mountaineers a healthy first innings lead on the second day of a Logan Cup match at Old Hararians on Monday.

His 102 was on the backdrop of other batters getting starts but not kicking on.

The chief wicket-taker was Wessly Madhevere who picked up his second five-wicket haul, ending up with figures of seven for 105.

When Compton departed the score was 214 for the loss of six wickets, which quickly fell apart to settle on what looked like an ignominious 248 for nine, given the platform.

Enter Tinashe Muchawaya, together with Clive Chitumba who was already in.

Chitumba got to his maiden half century in first class cricket with some reasonable batting. On the other end, Muchawaya bludgeoned the ball, scoring 50. It was off 52 balls but the fact that five were sixes and two were fours meant that 38 of the runs he scored were boundaries. It means the majority of the score came off just seven balls. Perhaps it then made sense when he was the last man to go, run out.

Mountaineers posted 328 from 99.1 overs., a lead of 147.

If Eagles need a steady hand this was the time, but Shoun Handirisi (11), Tinashe Kamunhukamwe (32) and Madhevere (8) all departed to leave their side reeling at 66 for the loss of three wickets at the close of play.

Still trailing by 81 runs, Eagles will have to bat out of their skins to take this into the final day.

Day three is on tomorrow at Old Hararians.
