LISTEN: Zifa’s Mpandare calls draw fair, confident Zimbabwe will take part in Afcon 2023 qualifiers

Wellington Mpandare

Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) General Manager (National Teams) Wellington Mpandare believes his side can qualify from the group they were drawn into for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Zimbabwe were drawn with neighbours South Africa, heavyweights Morocco and dark horses Liberia in Group K.

Mpandare said the players were excited by the draw and winning all their home matches and picking up a draw on the road was critical.

And he also believes that the Fifa ban will be lifted by the time the qualifiers start. Mpandare cited Youth, Sport, Art and Recreation Minister Kirsty Coventry’s telling parliament that she did not want athletes missing tournaments as reason for optimism that whatever was happening behind the scenes would bear fruit.

The ban must be lifted two weeks before the first round of matches.

Mpandare was however wary of whether Zimbabwe would be allowed to play their matches at home.

Mpandare spoke to 3-mob.com’s Larry Kwirirayi and you can listen to the full interview below:
