Highlanders ended ten years of heartache at the hands of bitter rivals Dynamos with a 2-0 victory in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match at Rufaro Stadium in Harare.
For long periods in the first half Dembare peppered the Highlanders goal but keeper Ariel Sibanda stayed resolute as the last line of defence. Once when he was beaten the cross bar as Farai Mupasiri failed to get his shot on target.
Highlanders were completely out of it, even in the second half, until Prince Dube got on the end of a brilliant counter attack to beat national team goalkeeper Tatenda Mukuruva at his near post.
After that Dembare’s heads dropped and Bosso’s period of dominance yielded a second goal as Bruce Kangwa nodded one in to beat Mukuruva again, an effort the keeper will have noone but himself to blame for.
Dynamos did hit the upright in the deep end of the match from Kevin Bulaji’s effort.
Erol Akbay was not pleased with the performance but he said it was all about the result:
I am the happiest man in the world right now and if you got to Bulawayo you will see how big a deal this was.
A ten year wait it was (18 attempts before this) and the last time Erol Akbay’s charges beat Dynamos they went on to win the league. The faithful perhaps can dream a little.
