Interventions to improve men’s football announced

The sports minister, the Sports and Recreation Commission and the Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) have met and discussed measures to improve performance of men’s football.

They are

  1. That ZIFA needs to put in place a robust talent identification, talent development, talent tracking programme that affects all communities across the country.
  2. That ZIFA needs to work on activating and organising community football by establishing and supervising community club system throughout the country.
  3. That ZIFA should re-introduce the ZIFA Cup competition, and extend it to cover community clubs, school football and college football as a way of identifying, developing and promoting talent.
  4. That ZIFA should establish a football School of Excellency to incubate and nurture talent.
  5. That the Minister of Sport and Recreation should consult his counterpart in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to allow football to be played throughout the school year.
  6. That ZIFA should take full advantage of the SRC sports programmes like the Youth Education Through Sport (YES) and National Youth Games programmes.
  7. That ZIFA should be present at the Ward level through volunteers to organise football at the grassroots level and to promote mass participation.
