Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan has refused to criticise Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez for the incident in the quarter finals of the 2010 Fifa World Cup, which saw his side fail to be the first African side to make it to the semi-finals.

In South Africa, Suarez deliberately saved a shot with his hands to prevent a certain goal that would have sent Ghana to the semi-finals at the South American’s expense.

A penalty was awarded, with the Suarez sent off.Gyan missed the penalty.

Now Gyan, who is working as a pundit on SuperSprort’s coverage of the ongoing Fifa World Cup in Qatar says he is not miffed.

Speaking to TALKsport, Gyan said, “I always say if I was Suarez I would have done the same thing to save my country. He’s a hero there.

“Although people see him as a cheat, he did what he had to do to get his country to the semi-final.

“People do hate him, but I’m in the game as well. He did what he had to do to get his country to the semi-final.

“It has been [more than] 10 years now and it still sticks in my mind. It is a pain that I have to live with.”

Suarez himself has refused to apologise for the incident and laid the blame squarely on Gyan for missing the spot kick.

Ghana and Uruguay meet on Friday, with a round-of-16 spot at stake.
