ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier rescheduled

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier which is a qualifying tournament to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 has been rescheduled.

They will be rescheduled from October to 3-11 September 2021 to ease regional calendar congestion involving hosts Botswana, Cameroon, Namibia, Nigeria, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

Should they win that tournament, Zimbabwe will play in a global qualifier in 2022 which will have:

Bottom teams in the MRF Tyres ICC Women’s T20I Team Rankings as of 30 November 2021 from the teams that competed at the Australia 2020 event x2
One qualifier per region x5
Highest ranked team in the regional qualifiers as of 30 November 2021 that didn’t win their regional group x1

Zimbabwe won the qualifier they hosted in 2019 but did not get to participate in the global one after suspension from the International Cricket Council due to government intervention.

For all the teams, it means that one month is shaved off their preparation for the tournament. Zimbabwe only recently started playing again, taking part in four rounds of regional matches between Northerns and Southerns squads. This is in preparation for the 50-over qualifier.
