The first news is that the global qualifier has been increased from 14 to 16. This will accommodate Zimbabwe and Nepal. Zimbabwe did not take part in the 2019 one because of suspension. They, Nepal, Hong Kong and UAE receive a bye to one of two global qualifiers that will have two from each making it to the finals in India.

The four teams who do not make it to the Super 12 in the ICC T20 World Cup 2020 will fall into the global qualifier as well. The teams making it to the Super 12 qualify for the next edition automatically.

The ICC will still use lead-in regional events – as has been done since 2011 – to decide some berths for teams participating in the dual 2021 global qualifiers. Two teams each from Asia, Europe and the Americas will join the regional champion from East Asia-Pacific and Africa in advancing to the global qualifier to take up eight of the 16 slots.

The splitting of the global qualifier also means there is a chance for bidding to be done to host a tournament.
