Highlanders Football Club has released a statement in which it apologised to its stakeholders, partners and innocent fans over crowd trouble leading to the abandonment of the Zimbabwe Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match against Dynamos on Sunday.
The premature end to the match was as a result of an invasion by the Bosso fans after they were aggrieved over a referee call which did not go their way. Dynamos were leading 2-0.
“The club condemns the unsporting behaviour that negatively profiles Zimbabwean football as a brand,” the statement continued.
“It is sad to see such ugly scenes at a family sport environment, especially a time when the club, together with other stakeholders are working tirelessly to bring fans back into stadiums and convincing the corporate world that sport in general and football in particular is worth their support.”
The communique proceeded to excoriate the ‘few selfish individuals who care less about the growth of their club and football in general.’
It concluded with an appeal to stakeholders to ‘put their heads together to find a lasting solution to this vice.’
