Former Wallabies star Kyle Godwin has touched down in Zimbabwe, bringing a wave of excitement as he joins the National Senior Men’s Rugby team, the Sables, ahead of their highly anticipated end-of-year tour to the United Arab Emirates and South Korea.

Arriving at Robert Mugabe International Airport, Godwin was met with a warm, celebratory reception from Sables management before heading straight into camp in Harare. This marks a monumental return for Godwin, who is visiting Zimbabwe for the first time in over twenty-five years.

The internationally acclaimed centre, who has dazzled the rugby world with his skills, is now officially eligible to represent Zimbabwe as they set their sights on World Cup qualification. His arrival heralds a new chapter for the Sables, with Godwin’s formidable presence set to add firepower to the squad.

Known for his expertise as an inside centre, Godwin is ready to reignite his partnership with fellow Sable and former Western Force teammate, Ian Prior.

“I’ve been in touch with Ian, and he had an incredible experience with the Sables in July,” Godwin told ZBC enthusiastically. “I’m thrilled to be part of the vibrant energy surrounding Zimbabwe Rugby right now. Zimbabwe has a proud history of producing world-class rugby talent, and I’m honoured to contribute to our push for World Cup qualification. I can’t wait to see our players shine on the global stage.”

Sifiso Made, Chief Executive Officer of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union, shared the excitement, confirming Godwin’s eligibility after approval from the World Rugby Regulations Committee. “Kyle Godwin has always been part of our vision, and we are absolutely thrilled that the birthright transfer from Australia has been finalised. His inclusion in the Sables is a monumental boost to our World Cup ambitions,” Made said.

Godwin, who debuted for the Wallabies in 2016 against France, currently plays for French club Lyon OU Rugby in the prestigious Top 14 competition. His illustrious career has also seen him represent the Western Force and Brumbies in Super Rugby, amassing an impressive 76 Super Rugby appearances.

A proud alum of Australia’s Under-20 team, which competed in the 2012 IRB Junior World Championship in South Africa, Godwin’s experience and leadership will undoubtedly elevate the Sables as they prepare for their November tour.

With the inclusion of a star player of Godwin’s calibre, Zimbabwe’s rugby dreams are brighter than ever, and the entire nation is poised to rally behind the Sables as they embark on this exciting journey towards global glory.
