The 2026 World Cup will have 48 teams, an expansion from the current 32-team format.
An initial stage of 16 groups of three teams will precede a knockout stage for the remaining 32 when the change is made for the 2026 tournament, as reported by the BBC.
The sport’s world governing body voted unanimously in favour of the change at a meeting in Zurich on Tuesday.
While the number of matches will rise from 80 to 64 but the eventual winners will play only 7 matches.
Fifa says the move is a drive to be more inclusive. And we love inclusion. In fact we don’t just love it, we bloody love it. But caution for us comes from what we saw at the expanded 2016 Euros were most matches were a bore.
What we are glad to see is more African countries at the showpiece, but yah.
