Ervine had dug in under difficult conditions holding it together to score 107, his third century in the format. Zimbabwe’s tormentor-in-chief Nayeem Hasan got one to come off the pads and knock over middle stump.

It was Hasan’s fourth wicket of day one.

There was precious little around Ervine who had to come in early when Abu Jayed got Kevin Kasuza who made 2 off 24 deliveries.

This is after Zimbabwe had won the toss and decided to bat.

The rebuilding work saw the second wicket partnership amass 111 runs with Prince Masvaure grinding out a 64, his highest in tests before Hasan removed him caught and bowled.

Brendan Taylor came in and was looking assured, timing them well. He tried a reverse sweep which did not pay off. Then he tried it again the next ball. It hit his glove before the follow-through of his bat guided it onto his own stumps. He was gone for 10. Hasan the man again.

Sikandar Raza, promoted up the order in the absence of regular captain Sean Williams, laboured to his 18 but he pushed at one that nicked his bat into the hands of wicketkeeper Liton Das off Hasan.

Timycen Maruma found the conditions particularly tough. He survived a leg-before when he was given out with the review showing that impact was outside and the ball was probably hitting fourth stump. When he took another review, this one was plum and he was gone for 7 off 35 balls.

On the other end, Ervine curated his innings which had 13 fours. He would fall the first ball of the 89th over.

Overnight, Zimbabwe are 228-6 with Regis Chakabva on 9 and Donald Tiripano yet to get off the mark.

Play resumes at 5.30 am Zimbabwe time. The match is available on SuperSport in Africa. Check your local listing for the channel.
