Eagles Women won by seven wickets
Modester Mupachikwa delivered a captain’s knock as Eagles Women claimed a seven-wicket victory over Rhinos Women in the Women’s T20 Cup at Kwekwe Sports Club on Friday.
Mupachikwa’s unbeaten 40 was the bedrock of a modest run-chase after Rhinos were restricted to 69 for the loss of five wickets in their allotted 20 overs.
This was after Rhinos had won the toss and chosen to bat.
A bad idea it seemed after Kellies Ndlovu picked the wicket of Kay Ndiraya for one, leaving the score at two for one after just 1.3 overs.
National skipper Mary-Anne Musonda then entered the fray, aiming to replicate her successes on match-day one.
She and Ashley Ndiraya put on a watchful 54-run partnership.
Musonda would depart for 21, having used up 34 balls – her innings had only one boundary.
Precious Marange claimed her wicket with Esther Mbofana completing the catch.
With the score then on 56 for two after 12.2 overs, Rhinos would have still felt a big score was in the offing, especially as opener Ashley Ndiraya still occupied the crease.
They were however circumspect and could only post 13 more runs from the remaining 46 balls of their innings.
Ashley Ndiraya made 31 before being run out by the combination of Marange and Vimbainashe Kavava.
Marange took two wickets, conceding nine runs from her four overs, while Ndlovu and Christabel Chatonzwa took one apiece.
When Chatonzwa fell with the score on 14 for Eagles, Rhinos may have smelt an opening.
Mupachikwa and Marange however combined for an aggressive second-wicket partnership of 34 off just 26 balls to take the game away from Rhinos.
Having taken the wicket of Chatonzwa leg before, Rebecca Chikomborero returned to bowl Marange for 14.
All Eagles needed to do from then on was to play a sensible game and they reached 71 for the loss of three wickets with five overs to spare.
Mupachikwa’s 40 came off 44 balls and included five boundaries.
Chikomborero took two wickets, conceding 19 runs while Nomatter Mutasa claimed one.
The win means Eagles have now won their opening two matches.

Tuskers Women – 94-5 in 20 overs (Tasmeen Granger 33*, Chiedza Dhururu 24, Ellen Tshuma 12; Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano 1/9, Loryn Phiri 1/9, Greatness Mutasa 1/16)
Mountaineers Women – 80 all out in 19 overs (Pellagia Mujaji 20, Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano 11, Loryn Phiri 9; Tasmeen Granger 2/9, Ellen Tshuma 2/10, Saidi Thuba 2/12)
Tuskers Women won by 14 runs
Tasmeen Granger starred with bat and ball as Tuskers Women beat Mountaineers Women by 14 runs in a Women’s T20 Cup match at Queens Sports Club on Friday.
Granger’s unbeaten 33 was crucial to Tuskers posting what turned out to be good total of 94 for the loss five wickets in their 20 overs.
Mountaineers had won the toss and elected to field.
They got their breakthrough in the third over when Audrey Mazvishaya had Regai Matongo caught behind by wicketkeeper Pinky Mashonganyika for one.
The second partnership yielded 25 runs before Natasha Mtomba departed for nine, bowled by Greatness Mutasa.
Granger joined Chiedza Dhururu at the crease before the latter would fall nine balls later for 24, with Loryn Phiri claiming her wicket.
The fourth-wicket partnership between Granger and Ellen Tshuma is what drove the innings, 36 runs coming from it.
Tshuma then fell, bowled by Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano for 12.
There were no significant runs by the other batters after that.
Granger’s 33 came off 38 balls and included three boundaries.
Mugeri-Tiripano and Phiri returned identical bowling figures of one wicket for nine runs.
In response, Mountaineers looked to be off to a great start.
Phiri, impressive in the last match, was promoted up the rank from the middle order, opening with Mugeri-Tiripano.
The pair put on a partnership of 25 before Granger trapped Mugeri-Tiripano for 11. This was inside three overs.
Two overs later, first Rumbidzai Nire for five and then Phiri for nine departed, four balls apart.
After that captain Pellagia Mujaji was the only one to provide some resistance in scoring 20.
Wickets fell at regular intervals and eventually Mountaineers were all out for 80 after 19 overs.
Granger took two for nine, Tshuma two for 10, Saidi Thuba two for 12 and Sibanda two for 15.
After the match, Tuskers skipper Sibanda explained why it was important to win after an opening day loss, saying, “It was important for players to come back into this tournament. I think this game [win] gave us confidence going forward.”
Losing captain Mujaji lamented the batting, saying, “We failed to build partnerships. We lost too many wickets in between. That really cost us the game.”
Mujaji was however adamant that her side were still in it with a lot of matches to go yet
