After the Pakistan tour Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne says his charges are hoping for a confidence booster when they take on Zimbabwe in a two-match test series that begins at Harare Sports Club on Sunday.
Speaking to the media ahead of the series said the quest would be on in spite of the fixture not being part of the World Test Championship:
Winning is the number one [objective]. We were not done well in Pakistan, the previous test series, so we need to now get some confidence for the next series. Obviously, it is not a test championship game but I think it is a tough game because we played against Zimbabwe, last time, and they were really good and they do a really good game with us. We are looking forward to get some confidence for the next series [at home to England]. For the bowlers, we were not done very well to gets some runs. For the bowlers, to get some wickets. So it is confidence for the next series.
Sri Lanka welcome back pace bowler Suranga Lakmal who missed the Pakistan series and it is players like him Karunaratne will rely on to boost his youthful attack.
On Zimbabwe having a bunch of new players in their squad and at leats one certain for debut, Karunaratne says there has been scouting going on.
He said:
It’s not easy when you are not seeing players before. So we were trying to get some information about those guys. The guys who played against us, I think we know what we can do and what we are capable of. For the five guys who are in the Zimbabwe side who have not played before, I think we have to take a closer look.
Sri Lanka’s duel against Zimbabwe should be tasty.
