Davis Cup Returns this weekend as Zimbabwe dates Romania

Davis Cup is back on the global stage this week, with four ties taking place at Group II level across the Americas, Asia/Oceania and Europe/Africa regions on 5-6 April.

Zimbabwe goes hunting in Eastern Europe and will face Romania in Piatra Neamt.

The indoor match will be played on a hard surface.

Romania boasts of a 1-0 lead in head to head against Zimbabwe having won in Harare in July 2000. Romania looks the stronger side, with a ranking of 42 against Zimbabwe’s 61.

However in a game of tennis anything can happen especially when facing Zimbabwe, a country that has pulled some of the biggest upsets in Davis cup history such as beating Australia (3-2) in their backyard in the 1998.

The Zimbabwe team will be pinning their hopes on the experience of Takanyi Garanganga who has a singles ranking of 449 and Benjamin Lock who has a ranking of 546. The non-playing captain Gwinyai Tongoona also nominated Courtney Lock who is more of a doubles specialist and the young Mehluli Sibanda.

Romania will be led by the talented Marius Copil who has a singles ranking of 80.

Speaking from their base in Romania, Takanyi Garanganga highlighted that the team has been preparing well for the tie. He further alluded to the fact that morale is high in camp and they are looking forward to the challenge
