Dav Whatmore: Zimbabwe Cricket Gets Serious

So we know that Zimbabwe cricket is about to appoint Australian cricketer and world cup winning coach Dav Whatmore as coach of the national team.

This comes after times when we experimented with some weird stuff like Alan Butcher and the low point that was the just-departed Stephen Mangongo.

Sure Butcher was a great guy but he just didn’t have the experience in the game needed to take the team forward. Mangongo barked a lot but the bite was missing. That experience at the highest level was just missing.

In Whatmore you have a guy who has proven pedigree as a coach. According to Espncricinfo:

Whatmore has previously been in charge of Asian sides Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Under Whatmore, Sri Lanka won the 1996 World Cup and Pakistan claimed the 2012 Asia Cup. During the 2007 World Cup, Whatmore led Bangladesh to victories over India and South Africa, helping the team reach the Super Eights.

So he is no mug.

Whatmore will serve until the World Cup when an extension may be negotiated.

Whatmore will assist with the preparations for the World Cup in New Zealand and Australia Zimbabwe and at his Dubai-based Academy.

Prior to joining Zimbabwe he was serving in an advisory role with the ICC High Performance Programme assisting affiliate countries to prepare for the World Cup.

Let’s see what happens because 2011 World Cup was pretty crap.

Whatmore will be presented before media on Tuesday at Harare Sports Club.
