New Zealand bounced back from a seven-wicket loss to crush Zimbabwe by 10 wickets at Harare Sports Club in the Royal Stag Cricket Gear Cup.
Zimbabwe won the toss and oddly enough sent the Black Caps in when they could have gone the other way.
Zimbabwe soon fell to a dismal 68-5 and only partnerships from centurion Sikandar Raza with first Sean Williams and then tail ender Tinashe Panyangara made it decent score.
Particularly encouraging was the 9th wicket partnership between Raza and Panyangara which lifted the score to a decent but difficult to defend 235.
Martin Guptill and Tom Latham were hardly troubled as they chased down the score to level the series.
Raza was particularly critical of the performance:
We failed as spinners to back the captain [Elton Chigumbura] which was frustraiting. We made the decision as a team to bat first and we failed.
Chigumbura backed the decision saying:
We felt that the wicket was dry and would be easier for pin later in the day which didn’t happen.
When we asked him if Zimbabwe could win the series:
Yes. I believe we can.
After such a schizophrenic set of performances, a huge win and big loss, you wonder what to expect next. We believe Zimbabwe can win this one.
The final and decisive series match of the one day series is on Friday 7 August.
