Chamu Chibhabha and Milton Shumba were solid in their unbeaten fifth-wicket stand of 124 , in Zimbabwe A’s 22-run win, via DLS method, over South Africa A at Harare Sports Club on Wednesday.
Things looked dire when the hosts were reduced to 46 for the loss of four wickets in 8.1 overs.
Brian Chari had gone cheap for four, in what was the third ball of the innings, out to Lutho Sipamla. Chibhabha came in at number three but lost the precocious Tadiwanashe Marumani for just 11, with Daryn Dupavillon taking his wicket. Dion Myers, who starred with the ball earlier and had impressed with the bat, was also out early, making only four runs with Junior Dala taking the wicket. Siphamla got Roy Kaia out for a duck and Zimbabwe were staring nervously down the barrel of a gun.
Chibhabha was fluent at that point and played a dutiful innings, the sort many want to see him doing in national colours at first team level. On the other end, Shumba was watchful, refusing to be tempted into shots.
The ship steadied and Chibhabha was at 85 off 103 balls, with Shumba on 50 off 98 balls before the heavens opened up. The former was looking good a century, but for Zimbabwe A, they would have been happy to collect a win.
Sipamla was two for 31 from his seven overs. Dupavillon was one for 36 and Dala one for 39.
That South Africa A bowlers had something significant to defend, was down to the exploits of Tony de Zorzi who made 60 before being bowled by Ainsley Ndlovu.
He had helped pull South Africa A from a precarious 74 for the loss of six wickets before he and Wihan Lubbe put on 52 for the seventh. Dala and Sipamla then later put on 54 for the 10th wicket, scoring 45 and an unbeaten 31 respectively.
That helped get South Africa A to 226 for the loss of nine wickets.
Myers took three wickets for 18 in six overs. Victor Nyauchi was expensive, getting two wickets for 61, having bowled out his 10 overs.
The fourth and final match is on Friday, with the series now 2-1 in favour of South Africa A.
