Botswana hold disjointed Zimbabwe

Botswana picked up a point against an unflattering, disjointed Zimbabwe performance in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Harare’s National Sports Stadium on Friday evening.

On a pitch affected by rain, Zimbabwe’s passing game was nullified and their continued failure to employ the wings left them short.

Captain Knowledge Musona who played the full 90 minutes looked a man playing his first competitive match of the season, listless, largely off-pace, with the first touch of a teenage crook pretending to a professional.

And yet, it was a match in which the big guns came back. The celebrated Marvelous Nakamba was metronomic while Knox Mutizwa battled for the scraps offered from midfield.

Botswana were a team that came for a point and Zimbabwe goalminder Elvis Chipezeze could have spent his evening writing a review of James Joyce’s Ulysses. Such was the comfort for the hosts.

When the chances came, Ronald Pfumbidzai in the second half, in particular, they were wasted. The half-chances were too far. On the whole, the final ball was poor.

And with Algeria winning 5-0 at home to Zambia, Zimbabwe are in a fix when it comes to this group.

They need a win against Zambia on Tuesday or else, might as well start planning for 2023.
