Zimbabwe international forward Khama Billiat’s Mamelodi Sundowns have been crowned champions of Africa after winning the two legged 3-1 final against Egyptian giants Zamalek.
Sundowns went into the Sunday night fixture with a 3-0 lead from the first leg in South Africa and were resolute in their 1-0 loss in Egypt.
Billiat became the second Zimbabwean to win the CAF Champions League and will now be going to the Club World Cup in Japan at the end of year to represent the continent.
Billiat was dangerous if not effective as lone striker, troubling Zamalek in the first half, one shot hitting the top of the crossbar after some great individual play.
In spite Masandawana’s loss of keeper Isaac Onyango to injury, Wayne Sandilands commanded his backline well although he will be disappointed with the goal conceded to Stanley Ohawuchi.
Zamalek pressed for long periods but the Pitso Masimone’s men decided to ditch style for steel to lift the title for the first time ever in their history.
Well done. This one is for COSAFA as much as it is for South Africa.
And mostly well done Khama!
