South Africa were handed a lifeline in their quest for qualification for next year’s FIFA World Cup in Brazil after Ethiopia were docked 3 points for using an ineligible player.
Ethiopian player, Minyahile Teshome Beyene, failed to serve the automatic one-match suspension imposed on him following two cautions received in two different matches.
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee considered the EFF liable for having breached article 55, paragraph 1 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code and article 8 of the 2014 FIFA World Cup regulations.
The match was awarded to Botswana 3-0 along with the 3 points.
As it stands Ethiopia who thought they had sealed qualification for the next round after they beat Bafana at home are 2 points ahead with one game to go.
Ethiopia and Bafana will play their last group matches against CAR and Botswana respectively on 7 September.
While Bafana could end up going through, it will merely paper over the cracks in Southern African football.
