So, what was so special in the performance of Sri-Lanka? Why did they win?

Reason #1

Dushmantha Chameera retired due to injury, which was a major setback for Sri Lanka. This was one of the reasons many people dismissed Sri Lanka, as Chameera had led the team for several years.

Chameera’s absence created a gap in the team. Dilshan Madushanka filled it. The left-arm pacer was the most valuable player of the tournament for the squad. With six dismissals, he was Sri Lanka’s leading wicket taker alongside the tournament’s MVP, Wanindu Hasaranga.

Madushanka has been an invaluable asset to the Lankan Lions, both with the new ball and in slog overs. He’s quick and can move the ball both ways. He bowled to Virat Kohli, troubled Babar Azam in both the Super Four and the final and was praised by Wasim Akram.

Reason #2

After struggling in the group stage, Sri Lanka’s newly formed opening duo of Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis proved their worth in the crucial Super Four stage of the tournament. Both openers contributed to Sri Lanka’s huge run chases against Afghanistan and India by providing stability at the top.

The lower line then came into play and helped the team recover from the difficult circumstances. The stars of Sri Lanka’s strong campaign were mainly captain Dasun Shanaka and the powerful batsman Bhanuka Rajapaksa. Although both had batting figures around 140, the two showed courage and hit some crucial runs for their team.

Reason #3

And the name of this reason is Dasun Shanaka. It took some time, but Sri-Lanka now appears to be a team capable of winning major global championships. Dasun Shanaka deserves a great deal of respect for assessing a player’s abilities and nurturing each individual’s strengths.

Since taking over as captain, Shanaka has shown that he’s an excellent leader in white-ball cricket, winning series against Pakistan, India and Australia.

Sri Lanka had a disastrous start to the recently concluded Asia Cup, losing to Afghanistan to open the tournament. They fought back impressively in a must-win match against Bangladesh to qualify for the Super Four stage. After this victory, Sri Lanka remained unbeaten for the rest of the continental tournament.

Shanaka’s on-field assessments were mostly correct, which was reflected in his team’s performance. For example, despite being vice-captain, taking out Charith Asalanka was a bold decision that Shanaka made at the right time, marking him out as a competent leader.

One can only be happy that Sri Lanka won the Asian Cup, especially after what they’d to go through in their homeland because of the economic crisis. If they continue as they’ve been, they should have no problem reaching the Super 12s and could make another run at the semifinals.
