Amidu, Pfumbidzai keep Caps United’s CAF Champions League hopes alive

Zimbabwe Champions Caps United will live to fight another day in their quest for a place in the CAF Champions League knockout stages after they beat Zamalek 3-1 at the National Sports Stadium in Harare.

A small crowd watched as Ronald Pfumbidzai in a packed box shot the ball through a crowded defence to put Kepekepe ahead in the 31st minute. It was the least they deserved as they dominated the Egytian giants.

Against the run of play, Caps were caught cold as Stanly Ohawuchi ran through on goal and his shot bounced off the keeper Prosper Chigumba, a lopped into the goal past the despairing attempted hacking defence of Justice Jangano.

In the second half the Green Machine toiled for long but a telling final ball was always lacking.

It was in the the 76th minute Abbas Amidu slotted the ball into the net to set up a tense finish.

And just as Zamalek were piling pressure in the 91st minute, Amidu broke from his on-half and rifled his shot past Ahmed El Shenawy in goal for the visitors.

Caps now know if they beat USM Alger in Algeria, they will make it through to the next round.
