3 things we learned from the second round of matches in the Logan Cup

The second round of matches in the Logan Cup brought with them a massive win for the returning Southern Rocks over Tuskers and a draw at Old Hararians where Rhinos took on Eagles.

Old Hararians as a venue is a worry

Two matches have been played and both have ended in draws. This is due to the poor drainage system at Old Hararians. With a healthy rainy season expected, the worry is that a lot of matches there could end up in draws. This is because when it rains overnight, a wet outfield means play starts late. if you get rain close to lunch time, you might as well forget about the rest of the day. This will mean a skewed set of results and with matches close to each other, it means there will be no chance of a variance in weather.

Something wrong with technique when playing swing

Zimbabwe-born Dutch international Shane Snater was impressive for his eight wickets ( returning his best innings (5-45) and match (8-94) figures in first class) in the match but a lot of that is down to Tuskers players struggling to get swing right. Four of the wickets he took were bowled or leg before. While we talk about the batting, it is disconcerting that after 13 innings there has been no century in all five times that have played.

Tuskers could struggle

Tuskers look a team with no balance. Sure they did not have Sean Williams in the side but it is hard to see how much of a difference he will make. Their bowling just looks flat compared to what the other teams have. They rely too heavily on spin which has seen them throw the slower bowlers while the new ball is still on. And even the return of Williams means they will simply have another spinner.

A break until 4 January 2020 when domestic cricket returns with T20.
