3 things we learned from the first round of the Logan Cup

The first round of the Logan Cup for 2020/2021 has come and gone.

Logan Cup action 2020/21

Eagles beat Mountaineers and Tuskers draw with Rhinos. Southern Rocks had a bye.

Here are the three things we learned on match day one.

Tanaka Chivanga has pace

Zimbabwe lacks genuine pacemen and Chivanga, making his debut at first class impressed. He had consistent line and length for long periods. He took 3-32 in the Mountaineers first innings and was luckless in the second one. He is certainly someone who interests the selectors because of the lack of pace in the national team and with some work he should make for a good team.

The batting needs work

While the match between Tuskers and Rhinos had some runs, it was the rate at which the runs were achieved. Only two batsmen across both matches who scored at least 20 runs did that at more than a run a ball. That was Peter Moor with 59 off 41 and Wessly Madhevere at 44 off 28 balls. What is more, most of the scores about 20 rarely were at a strike rate of 50%. As seen in the test match between Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, the batsmen are good at staying in but don’t make scores.

Fitness is an issue

The timing when hitting, the diving, the catches, and the lack of players getting to three figures on day one especially after facing a copious amount of balls speaks to the lack of fitness. One example is how Donald Tiripano went out in the Mountaineers first innings when he was looking comfortable went out. But even then, his 40 had come off 149 balls, this on the third day with no chance of playing out for a draw.

Other highlights was the bowling of Faraz Akram and Brad Evans. Their development will be interesting to watch throughout the season as coach Lalchand Rajput looks for more arsenal to beef up an ageing side.Another player of interest will be Takudzwanashe Kaitano of Rhinos. He scored 86 and 40 in their match against Tuskers.
