2023 Afcon moved to 2024

The 2023 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations has been moved to early 2024, the Confederation of African Football.

This was confirmed by Caf president Patrice Motsepe on Sunday.

The edition was supposed to be held in June-July 2023 in Cote d’Ivoire but will now move to January-February 2024.

The reason is because of incessant rains in the country which has seen flooding, as is normal at this time of the year. Caf had in 2017 agreed to move the continent’s showcase tournament to the middle of the year to accommodate European leagues which are active in the beginning of the calendar year.

“We cannot take the risk,” the South African said in the Moroccan capital Rabat.

“January is not the ideal time because of the European clubs, but it is the only choice we have,” Motsepe added.

The option to move it to early 2023 was not considered because of the 2022 World Cup being held in Qatar this November-December

Zimbabwe are not taking part in the qualifiers for this tournament after they were slapped with a Fifa ban over government intervention.
