ZRP bars 2pc tax demo, ZCTU to approach courts and warns of ‘potent’ option

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has barred the planned demonstration by the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions over the 2% intermediary transaction tax announced recently by Finance and Economic Development minister Mthuli Ncube.

The demonstrations, announced by ZCTU president Peter Mutasa were penciled for Thursday.

And the reason:

The directive by the Ministery of Health and Child Care and Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing to ban gatherings in the Central Business Districts and other public areas still stands.

Therefore the organisers of the intended demonstrations by ZCTU and its affiliates should take note of the Government’s directive particularly the movement of large numbers of people from one point to another which includes cholera epicentres.

The communique also adds that the ongoing efforts indicate that cholera has not been wiped out particularly in Harare.

Added too was a warning that if ‘anything turns nasty’ organisers will be held responsible.

In response ZCTU said:

We will instruct our lawyers to urgently approach the courts. It is a good test for all to see if we abide by our constitution and if the courts will abide by the same. If it fails we will announce the next option which is more potent than the demonstration.
