A report in The Sunday News says Zimbabwe is seriously considering legalising marijuana.
It quotes Macro-Economic Planning and Investment Promotion Minister Dr Obert Mpofu as saying a Canadian company has submitted a proposal to produce marijuana in certain areas for health reasons.
This company is from Canada and it’s one of the biggest conglomerates in that country and they are producing cannabis for medical purposes under strict conditions. I don’t see anything wrong and I think if we legalise mbanje we will benefit medically because it is used for pain killers such as morphine. South Africa has done that.
Under current laws, marijuana possession will land you 12 years in the slammer.
An organisation called the Zimbabwe Civil Liberties and Drugs Network has been more radical illicit drug reform and harm reduction.
They are proposing a less punitive system for drug use, a decriminalisation approach to drugs including marijuana including for recreational purposes.
