Zimbabwe’s Shona community in Kenya finally recognized by the Government of Kenya.
President Uhuru Kenyatta conferred citizenship on Shona community members on Saturday.
The Shona community in Kenya is estimated at 3,500 members.
Shona becomes Kenya’s 44th tribe.
They have been in that country for over five decades after a hundred of them moved there as missionaries. At that time Kenya had no provision for foreigners to be granted citizenship after they met the first president of the Republic, the late Jomo Kenyatta.
Since then, they have been stateless, meaning they could not access to health, education and many other services as they did not possess identification particulars.

1,300 members of various Rwandese communities descendants of the Rwandese community were also accorded citizenship in Jamuhuri Day celebrations. They too were stateless after arriving there in the 1930s and 1950s.
