The Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe has written to President Robert Mugabe to intervene and rescind a part of the constitution that forbids corporal punishment.
The secretary-general of the union said there was an increase in bad behaviour and indiscipline sine the new rules came into place.
If you remember, a few weeks ago, we published an article in which a High Court judge ruled that corporal punishment was illegal even in the home sparking and widespread debate.
Majongwe says the whole beating up kids keeps them in the straight and narrow. Either that or members of his union really like beating up people. That would be scary.
As we said before we are not sure when it comes to this directive because, well erm, not all kids are the same. If they were then we would have one rule and we would end the same. But we don’t. Even kids in the same family don’t because they respond to different stimuli.
