SA moves to adjusted 14-day level 4 lockdown, with alcohol ban

South Africa’s president Cyril Ramaphosa announced an adjusted level lockdown, for 14 days, from Monday 28 June to Sunday 11 July 2021.

Ramaphosa admitted that there have been some missteps along the way in trying to get rid of the Covid-19 in South Africa.

He said, the situation had gotten worse since 12 days ago, when he announced a level three lockdown.

The Delta variant has been discovered in Eastern Cape, Western Free Cape, Free State, Kwazulu Natal and Gauteng. Gauteng is responsible for 60 percent of infections.

Ramaphosa said the country was now firmly in the third wave.

Because of how quickly it spreads, the measures in place have not been sufficient.

The new restrictions are:

  • All gatherings, whether indoors or outdoors are prohiibited
  • Funerals and cremations will be permitted but not more than 50 people. Night vigils and after funeral gatherings, not allowed
  • Public spaces such as beaches and parks will remain but no gatherings
  • Alcohol sale prohibited
  • Curfew will run from 9pm to 4am.
  • Travel in and out of Gauteng for leisure purposes, will be prohibited. This does not work work, business, transit.
  • Visits to old age and care homes will be prohibited
  • Restaurants to only do takeaways.
  • Schools to start closing from this Wednesday 30 June 2021.
  • Contact classes at tertiary institutions will close by Wednesday 30 June 2021. Residences will remain open.
  • The measures in place are meant to allow as much business activity to continue. Most businesses will be allowed to function as long as they do not flout regulations.
  • Face masks that cover mouth and nose are mandatory.
