SA Government Condemns “So-called Xenophobic Attacks”

South Africa’s government has come out and criticised attacks on foreign nationals within its borders.

Through its spokesperson it said:

Government has noted with concern so-called xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals… We strongly condemn violence, not only on foreign nationals, but also on South Africans.

There has been an escalation of violence of late particularly aimed at foreigners in the country. Two Zimbabweans were shot dead this weekend by a Somali businessman this past weekend. Nine people have since been arrested for possession of stolen goods and public violence after looting incidents.

A further 90 were arrested last week in Evaton, Orange Farm, and Sebokeng, south of Johannesburg and linked to over 100 acts of  looting and vandalism of spaza shops belonging to foreign nationals and locals.

This will come at an unwelcome time for South Africa especially at a time when Africa is celebrating the 50th year of the of African Union.

We pray for our brothers and sisters in South Africa right now.
