The Namibia government has announced a strict visa regime for 31 countries which it said do not offer a favourably reciprocal system when its own nationals visit.
“In recent years, the Republic of Namibia through the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security has extended gestures of goodwill and favourable treatment to nationals of various countries,” a communique released Wednesday evening read.
“However, despite these efforts, certain nations have not reciprocated. In light of this disparity, the government has deemed it necessary to implement a visa requirement to ensure parity and fairness in diplomatic interactions.”
The extensive list includes former coloniser, Germany, France, the United States and United Kingdom.
As to what that will like, it said, ” The date of implementation and application will be communicated at a later stage through diplomatic channels. Nationals from the following 31 countries will be issued with visas upon arrival in Namibia at an applicable fee in addition to online visa application:
Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Liechtenstein, Luzembourg, Moldova, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Tukmenistan, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States of America, Uzbekistan.
Windhoek insists that the move is meant to simply encourage reciprocity, which implies that should the above countries change their stance, Namibia will too.
