Meanwhile Junior Doctors Are On Strike… And We Don’t Seem To Care

A story that has been dealt with rather flippantly in Zimbabwe media is the current strike by junior doctors all over the country.

As many as 400 (300 by some sources) have downed their tools because of a salary dispute with their employer, the government.

Currently they get $282 to save lives. They want that upped to $1,200 and all sorts of allowances increased or added.

The state media has mentioned it in passing. On Tuesday night the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation devoted copious amounts of time to the infighting in Zanu-Pf with the story of the doctors being on strike getting a bit of look and that was it.

NewsDay, to their credit have been giving the issue some creditable space.

Meanwhile, at Harare Hospital it is being reported that patients are being turned away if their situation is not considered critical. Senior doctors are doing what they can but without the trusted hands of the junior doctors it is an onerous task in an already understaffed sector.

Yes, we know the government is already redefining the concept of being broke but what are we doing about it? Social media would rather spend time talking about today’s ridiculousness instead of the issues that affect life, literally.

Sure, you may be sitting with access to any medical aid you fancy but think of it this way. Somewhere out there is a person who has walked 20 km to the nearest clinic. They were told their condition was no good and the clinic can’t help. They were sent to the district hospital where they were informed that they needed to be taken to, say Parirenyatwa or Mpilo. They were lost for ideas and they finally came up with that $20 that will take them to Harare or Bulawayo. They get there and they get told that because their condition is not critical there are no doctors to fix them. On their way home, they drop dead.

That person could be your favourite uncle.

Oh but we don’t really want to talk about that. We’d rather spend hours talking about the Sexiest Zimbabwean Woman Alive list.

Yes, that’s us.
