Former South African president Nelson Mandela is in ‘serious’ but stable condition after being hospitalised in the early hours of Thursday morning.
He is being treated for a persistent lung infection according to President Jacob Zuma:
During the past few days, former President Nelson Mandela has had a recurrence of lung infection… This morning at about 1.30a.m., his condition deteriorated and he was transferred to a Pretoria hospital.
The statement added that every possible care was being given to him.
It is the fourth time he has been hospitalised since December last year.
