South African government officials say former president Nelson Mandela is back in hospital with the recurrence of a lung infection.
A statement issued said he was admitted just after midnight on Wednesday, without giving further details.
Said President Jacob Zuma in a statement:
We appeal to the people of South Africa and the world to pray for our beloved Madiba and his family and to keep them in their thoughts. We have full confidence in the medical team and know that they will do everything possible to ensure recovery.
Reports indicate that he is conscious at the moment but no other information has been provided.
Mandela has been in and out of hospital a lot of late which is to be expected for a man his age. Most recently it was earlier in March this year for a medical checkup and for three weeks in December after a procedure to remove gallstones.
We wish the man well.
