Opposition CCC spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere has been found guilty of communicating falsehoods by a Harare Magistrate’s court.
She has been convicted of communicating a falsehood prejudicial to law enforcement after tweeting that a baby had died after being beaten by police while strapped to its mother’s back. This had been erroneously reported and the video went viral.
Mahere had also been charged with communicating a falsehood prejudicial to the State, for which she was found not guilty. That was the inciting violence charge, which would have been more grievous.
This was after a full trial.
Harare Regional Magistrate Mr Taurai Manwere said that she materially lied about the incident, given it was not in dispute that the baby was not dead.
